PRIVATE EQUITY TAKING STAKE IN SPORTS

Arctos Sports Partners has closed investments into two NHL teams this past weekend. The private equity firm has acquired stakes in both the Minnesota Wild and the two-time defending Stanley Cup champion, Tampa Bay Lightning. This is another move in a rapidly expanding portfolio of teams for Arctos that includes the Golden State Warriors, Sacramento Kings, and Fenway Sports Group, the parent company of the Boston Red Sox, Liverpool FC, and the Pittsburgh Penguins. As the major leagues in the U.S. and across the globe continue to change the regulations for team ownership, it will be key to keep an eye on private equity firms as they continue to push into the sports industry to diversify their portfolios.
