Cosm: Creating New Shared Experiences

In the 2010s, the world was introduced to a revolutionary new technology: the virtual reality headset. This technology gave owners the ability to visually be anywhere in the world, all from the comfort of their own homes. The key component of virtual reality being the high definition view.

Virtual reality has taken many new forms over the past decade. In the sports industry, it has expanded to the fan viewing experience. Creating opportunities for fans to view and interact with professional sports like never before. However, it’s reaching new heights in 2021.

Cosm Viewing Experience

The Tokyo 2020 Olympics forced the industry to develop new ways to bring the Games to the fans. With no viewers allowed in the stands and consumers on the other side of the world, suppliers needed new means to deliver the Games.

Enter Cosm. The technology company offered a shared virtual reality experience with their immersive 180° 8K 20M diameter LED dome. Inviting former Olympians and their families to experience the next best thing to competing in the Games themselves.

This LED dome showcased the ultimate shared reality viewing experience by unlocking the powers of a VR headset and unleashing them into a physical space. Bringing viewers into the Games by giving them unique views and angles of competition. Immersive feeds were provided by their partners at NBC.

This experience, coined Shared Reality by Cosm’s CEO Jeb Terry, is the perfect combination of Immersivity and being amongst a crowd. For Cosm, it is known as “The World’s best Watch Party.”

The Power of Togetherness

The Shared Reality experience created by Cosm truly hones in on Sports Innovation Lab’s concept of The Power of Togetherness. An essential component of the fan experience is the feeling created when a group of fans comes together.

Sports Innovation Lab seeks technology bringing fans together, rather than guiding them toward an individual screen.

Technology like Cosm’s Shared Reality Experience alters the traditional VR experience in ways never seen before. What was once a solo headset experience, now has the potential to be shared. Unlocking the opportunity for fans to come together and cheer on their team, favorite athletes, or country as one. Fandom is universal and expands beyond a single geographic location.

The Fluid Fan and the Future

The Fluid Fan is open to change, empowered to choose, and continuously evolving. The industry is constantly seeking new ways to engage with these fans. New technology and immersive experiences, like the Cosm Shared Reality Experience, are leaning into these characteristics of the modern-day fan. It also unlocks new opportunities to engage and capture the fans’ attention.

Cosm is looking to redefine the way the world experiences content. This technology is unlocking new shared reality capabilities within the sports industry. Exciting times lay ahead for Cosm and their technology. Keep an eye on this innovative group as they continue to disrupt the venue and immersive media space.
