A Call to Action to Invest in the Lack of Human Performance Research for Women

Sports Innovation Lab has released a report with Booz Allen Hamilton called “What We Don’t Know About Women Warriors” (which you can download here). This report explores human performance optimization of women in the military. This is the first public report jointly issued by Sports Innovation Lab and Booz Allen through its Tactical Athlete Leadership Board (TALB), an ongoing initiative that unites thought leaders from across sport, academia, and technology. The TALB was formed in 2020 to identify the latest advanced technologies and best practices across human performance in order to support elite women warriors.

This report is a call to action to stakeholders to invest in human performance research where it has been lacking for women. While there is a confirmed substantial gap in research between female and male bodies, “What We Don’t Know About Women Warriors” offers guidance on optimization around pillars that are key to women's health and wellbeing.

  1. These include:

    • Training and testing standards

    • Injury prevention and rehabilitation

    • Supplementation and nutrition

    • Equipment

    • Human performance technology

“Together with Booz Allen - and built upon our years of human performance work in professional sports - we have identified areas of opportunity where increased research and innovation specific to the needs of the female body can lead to improved performance and health outcomes of women on the frontlines,” said Josh Walker, Co-Founder and President of Sports Innovation Lab.

With the lack of current research on female bodies, there can be ill-suited programming, training, and equipment for women warriors. A majority of basic information comes from male bodies, and the corresponding models that are used to analyze are based on male cadavers. This ultimately can lead to higher risk for injury and lack of belongingness for women in the military.

“What We Don’t Know About Women Warriors” provides guidance on developing personalized, data-centric training solutions using the latest in analytics technologies to specifically improve the experience of females in the military.
