“If you can see her, you can be her - whether that’s the person on the court, or the person presenting you with the sports news,” Khristina Williams, founder of Girls Talk Sports TV, said in her interview for Sports Innovation Lab’s Content Creator series. Khristina Williams seeks to be - and is - that “her” for many young girls looking for a role model in the sports broadcasting world.

Girl’s Talk Sports TV is a platform that features journalism, interactive forums, and athlete profiles centering around women in sports, particularly focusing on the WNBA. Being a woman of color, Khristina is seeking a change in the sports industry to be more inclusive. White men have had the sports spotlight as long as the industry has existed. As powerful female trailblazers and content creators are integrating themselves into the narrative, a new landscape for women has opened and opportunities are slowly starting to come out of the woodwork. That said, trailblazers like Khristina are incredibly important in opening this landscape because there’s still so far to come in order to level the playing field for women and minorities that have been underrepresented in an industry that has dominated the public eye and economic terrain for almost a century.

Calling this disparity out in her interview, Khristina says, “Statistics show that less than 4% of all media coverage goes to women’s sports. Statistics also show that less than 2% of all sports reporters are black women. Creating Girls Talk Sports TV was important to me not only to tackle those statistics, but also because I wanted to show that women’s sports deserve to be front and center of culture and conversation.”

Any athlete knows that to be successful, your mentality must center around progress, fairness, and a hunger for improvement. It’s time for the sports industry to adopt this mentality. Women everywhere are demanding that the business of sport gets better and the playing field finally becomes fair. Women like Khristina are not only demanding that people pick up the phone and listen to the call to action that is sounding in the industry, but also serve as role models for young women everywhere, truly inspiring and showing a new generation that “if you can see her, you can be her.”
